Navigating the Digital Shift: Building a Personal Brand from Boardrooms to Browsers

Updated: Aug 13

Spoiler: I survived, my website survived, and my coffee machine deserves a medal.

Kavita Desai focused on her work, with a calm expression.

Let’s get real - building your own website as a strategic leader isn’t exactly what you plan for in your career.

After 23+ years leading Corporate Communications, Brand Management, CSR, and DEI at the highest levels, I’m used to boardrooms, global narratives, and team leadership - the usual leadership jazz.

So, why did I become my own web developer, content creator, and occasional tech troubleshooter? Simple - if I didn’t take control of my story, no one else would. I took a deep breath and decided to own it, on my terms.

Owning Your Story Is Now Essential: Building Your Personal Brand

If you think having a LinkedIn profile is enough, I get it - I thought so too. But today, your leadership presence needs a space that’s truly yours. Not ruled by algorithms or buried in endless feeds, but a place where your values, experience, and personality come through loud and clear.

For me, that meant building my personal brand by launching my website - www.kavitadesai.com a simple, authentic space to show what leadership really looks like today: strategic thinking, brand stewardship, honest storytelling, and yes, a genuine passion for driving CSR and DEI.

Hat Juggling: Wearing Hats I Didn’t Even Know Existed

One minute I’m confidently leading strategy sessions. The next, I’m frantically Googling why my website won’t load - at midnight. Suddenly, I was not just a strategist but also a designer, coder, tech support, and occasional therapist for myself.

Turns out, building a website isn’t just “click and done.” There are layouts to tweak, passwords to reset, SEO acronyms that might as well be alien language, and security steps that made me wonder if I should just live off the grid.

But here’s the thing: whether calming a crisis or debugging a stubborn plugin, being resourceful is the key. I broke it down, asked for help (thank goodness for friends who actually know this stuff), and learned that patience isn’t corporate jargon - it’s survival mode.

Writing About Myself: The Most Challenging Brand

Laptop reading "Driving your business" on a cluttered wooden desk with plants, papers, and pens. Large window view of green trees.

Trying to write about myself without sounding like a soulless corporate drone was its own challenge. Writing brand narratives or ghostwriting for CXOs? Easy. Writing about me? Suddenly the hardest assignment ever.

Where do you start? How do you say “I’m good at what I do” without sounding like you swallowed a thesaurus whole or just finished a 300-page leadership manual? How do you avoid sounding self-obsessed while owning your story?

So, I ditched the fluff and jargon. Kept it real, clear, and human - because no one wants to read “synergistic paradigms” (unless you’re a robot). Just honest talk from someone who’s been in the trenches and knows leadership is about people, not buzzwords.

Lessons Learned from This Milestone

Building my website was a lesson in patience, precision, and unexpected truths:

  • The little things aren’t so little. Fonts, colours, and words build trust. Miss one, and visitors disappear.

  • Your online presence is the new handshake. First impressions now happen on screens and last.

  • People crave authenticity, not polished PR speak. Show your real self, quirks included, to connect.

  • Patience is your superpower. When your site crashes, deep breaths and caffeine help.

  • Empathy changes everything. Understanding your audience is crucial in leadership and messaging.

Implications for You: Main Points

  • Own your narrative. Your story is your asset.

  • Create a digital home. Reflect your values and expertise.

  • Embrace learning. Break it into steps and seek help.

  • Be human. Use plain, honest language.

  • Stay patient and persistent. Steady progress wins.

  • Understand your audience.

What’s Next? More Conversations, More Connections, More Impact

This website isn’t just a shiny digital trophy. It’s already cracking open doors - fueling real conversations, sparking invitations to speak, and connecting me with people who value authenticity and sharp strategic thinking.

It’s proof that owning your story can lead to unexpected opportunities - and I’m just getting started.

Conclusion: Embrace Your Story, Begin Today

This milestone reminded me that leadership isn’t just about what you say in meetings - it’s about how you show up everywhere, especially online.

If you’re a leader still on the fence about building your digital home, stop waiting. It might get messy, test your patience, and maybe even make you sweat a little - but trust me, it’s worth it. In today’s world, owning your story isn’t just smart - it’s essential.

Great article, Kavita. True leadership is about values as much as results, and your journey in Corporate Communications and CSR reflects that beautifully. Building a personal brand takes vision, resilience, and meaningful contributions—qualities you’ve clearly demonstrated.
